BOTCHED ROBBERY, CHASE, ENDS IN ARREST

A failed robbery attempt near an upscale South Forsyth County neighborhood came to an abrupt halt early yesterday afternoon when the suspected robber wrecked his car after a high-speed chase.

The events of the incident unfolded like this:  At approximately 1:30 p.m., a 39 year-old resident of Lawrenceville, GA was entering the Bank of America branch at 3165 Peachtree Parkway near Laurel Springs Golf Community.  As he walked to the bank, a black Dodge Magnum driven by a black male entered the parking lot.  The suspect exited the Dodge and said to the victim, “Give me your bag (of money)!”  Although no weapon was shown, the suspect indicated that he had a weapon in his clothes.  At this point, the victim ran around the side of his car and screamed for someone to call 911.  The suspect went to the victim’s car and, after not finding a bank bag, went back to the Dodge.  He fled the scene headed northbound on Peachtree Parkway.

Forsyth County 911 immediately placed a lookout on the suspect’s vehicle.  A few minutes later, the vehicle was spotted near Buford Highway and GA 400.  As the deputy activated his emergency equipment in an attempt to stop the vehicle, the suspect began driving at a high rate of speed southbound on GA 400.  The pursuit continued for several miles, with the suspect’s vehicle reaching speeds of over 120 mph and weaving in and out of traffic.  At the McFarland Road exit, the suspect drove his vehicle up the exit ramp and across McFarland Road, striking the center median.  This caused the right rear passenger tire of the suspect’s vehicle to blow out.  The suspect re-entered GA 400 and continued southbound.  As the pursuit passed under McGinnis Ferry Road, the suspect attempted to cross the median and enter the northbound lanes of GA 400.  However, the Dodge Magnum became stuck in the median.

The suspect, identified as Marcus Collier, age 23, of 8533 Avalon Drive, Riverdale, GA, exited the Dodge Magnum and surrendered to the deputies by placing his hands in the air.

Collier faces a number of charges including Armed Robbery, Entering Auto, Reckless Driving, Felony Attempting to Elude, Failure to Maintain Lane, and Attempt to Conceal License Plate.

No one was injured in the pursuit.  Collier is being held without bond in the Forsyth County Jail.

A mug shot of Collier is enclosed with this press release.
