Friday, January 3, 2003 Traffic fatalities in Forsyth County dropped 40%, from 20 to 12 in 2002, Sheriff Ted Paxton announced today. Asked to what he attributed the decrease, Sheriff Paxton stated that a number of factors came together, all of which contributed to the decrease. "In 2001 we had six fatalities on GA 400," Paxton said. "Five of those were north of Hwy. 369 in the uncontrolled access area," he added. "This year, we concentrated patrols in that area, which obviously made the difference." "We also attribute the decline to selective enforcement in high accident areas, as well as our active involvement in various safety programs, such as Click It or Ticket". "Contrary to what some people would like to think, seat belts do save lives", he added. Of the 12 fatalities in Forsyth County this year, only two were wearing seat belts. "We hope that 2003 is an even safer year in Forsyth County," Sheriff Paxton said. "I want to remind everyone to drive defensively," he added. "Due to the high volume of traffic on our county roads, it is extremely important that every motorist drive with safety in mind." |
