Forsyth County Sheriff's Office Traffic Specialists today are attempting to determine what caused William Kent Darling’s Buick to leave the roadway yesterday and strike a tree, resulting in Darling’s death.

The accident, which occurred at 4:20 p.m. shut down Highway 9 at Majors Road for over an hour. According to Traffic Specialist Cpl. Chris Shelton, Darling was northbound on Hwy. 9 just north of Majors Road when his 1992 Buick Park Avenue suddenly veered off the road, struck a tree and burst into flames. According to Shelton, Darling never applied his brakes. Darling, 62, was dead at the scene. He was a resident of Alpharetta.

"We’re looking into the possibility that Mr. Darling may have had a medical condition which contributed to the cause of this wreck," Shelton said.

Darling is Forsyth County’s fifth traffic-related fatality this year.
