A Forsyth County man was arrested and charged in the shooting of his neighbor early Saturday morning.

Ronald Deadwyler, 60, was taken into custody minutes after allegedly fleeing the scene in a 1997 Chevrolet Silverado. He was charged with aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime. He was released Monday from the Forsyth County Detention Center on a $40,000 bond.

The victim, Glen Schroedel, 35, of Lakeside Trail in Cumming, remained in critical condition in an Atlanta hospital earlier this week. Schroedel was shot three times in the back. The incident occurred at approximately 12:45 a.m. Saturday. The shots from the handgun entered Schroedel through his back, exiting through his chest, stomach and leg.

Upon arrival at Lakeside Trail Saturday morning, deputies reported finding Schroedel on the ground. He was bleeding through his T-shirt and a woman who lives with Schroedel was standing over him.

Deputies said she identified Deadwyler as the shooter when he drove by in a pickup. Deadwyler was cornered by deputies on a nearby street.

Alcohol apparently played a role in the shooting. Detectives are still investigating the incident and remain unsure as to what sparked the shooting.

“Both parties were highly intoxicated,” said Major Gene Moss, commander of the sheriff’s enforcement division.

The district attorney’s office is assisting in the investigation, and additional charges are pending, Moss added.
