July 29, 2002 A two-year old girl was killed on Saturday afternoon when her family’s van rolled down a steep driveway and trapped the child underneath. According to deputies at the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office, the two-year-old, identified as Mary Madison Hamby Garcia, was playing in the van while a family friend was inside the van vacuuming. The van apparently was knocked out or slipped out of gear and began rolling down the driveway with the child still inside. The male friend grabbed onto the vehicle, attempting to stop it, however, he was unsuccessful. The van struck a tree, ejecting the child, throwing her into the path of the van. The child was pronounced dead at the scene. The incident occurred at approximately 1:34 p.m. on Saturday at the child’s home on Hughes Drive off of Ga. Hwy. 9 North. Investigators were called to the scene. The incident has been ruled an apparent accident. |
