EARLY MORNING COLLISION CLAIMS LIFE OF FANNIN COUNTY MAN

Saturday, November 9, 2002

One man is dead and his friend remains on life support following an early morning head-on collision in Forsyth County this morning.

The accident, which occurred at 6:20 a.m. on Canton Hwy. (GA Hwy. 20) at Jake Drive, claimed the life of Michael William Chastain, 22, of Mineral Bluff, GA. The passenger in Chastain's car, a 2001 Dodge Neon, was Carl Benjamin Franklin, 25, of Cherry Log, GA. Chastain was dead at the scene. Franklin was taken by helicopter to North Fulton Regional Hospital. At the time of this press release, Franklin remains on life support. Both Mineral Bluff and Cherry Log are located in Fannin County.

According to Forsyth County Sheriff's Office Traffic Specialist Cpl. Chris Shelton, Chastain's car was eastbound on Canton Hwy when it suddenly veered across the road and collided head-on with a west-bound 1993 Mack Truck belonging to Waste Management. The driver of the garbage truck, Thomas Ganschow, 42, of Roswell, GA, was not injured. It is unknown at this time what caused Chastain to lose control of his car.

Both Chastain and Franklin were employed by a local electrical contractor in Cumming. It is believed they were on their way to work. Forsyth County Sheriff's Office Traffic Specialists are conducting an investigation into the cause of the accident.
