The Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office Explorer Program was conceived in 1995. Since then, it has grown to its current authorized size of 20 Explorers and their advisors.
The Explorer Program is designed to attract young, well-qualified men and women to participate in an organized on-the-job training program that will prepare them for a career in law enforcement once they reach age 21 and become eligible to become a peace officer in Georgia.
Among other things, the Explorer Program provides training in the duties, responsibilities, methods and techniques of the Agency. Persons participating in Explorers are expected to gain practical knowledge of the functions of the Sheriff’s Office and some of the basic theories of law enforcement. Explorers who are attending college and who are studying courses such as Police Science, Criminal Justice, Criminology and other related courses will be given the opportunity to compliment their education with actual performance in the Sheriff’s Office.
In addition, Explorers are taught the responsibility of becoming a peace officer and the commitment that comes with a career in law enforcement. In the discharge of this responsibility we must realize and accept that all operations are in the best interest of public safety and welfare. Therefore, our Explorers are taught to follow our Mission Statement, which states:
"To serve and protect through dedication, professionalism, active cooperation with the community, and respect for human dignity."
The Explorer Program is open to students between the ages of 14 & 20 years of age. Explorers must maintain a minimum of a 2.0 scholastic average and if in college, must be enrolled in at least one course. In addition, Explorers must have and maintain a clean driving record and must not have been convicted of a serious crime. Explorer candidates must also be in good physical condition.
