South Precinct Names Deputy of the Month

Forsyth County Deputy Sheriff Ben Smith has been named the South Precinct’s Deputy of the Month for December, 2009, South Precinct Commander Captain Ron Freeman announced today.

Deputy Smith, who was employed with the Sheriff’s Office in March, 2005 was selected among his peers for his outstanding work and the excellent customer service he provides.

According to Captain Freeman, Deputy Smith consistently makes numerous drug-related arrests each month.  For example, on December 15, Smith made a routine traffic stop on Highway 20.  As a result of his excellent roadside interviewing skills, Smith determined that the driver of the vehicle had 9 active warrants and the passenger had 11 active warrants outstanding from several jurisdictions.  In addition, Smith’s arrest of these two individuals resulted in the discovery of 320 illegal pills in the vehicle, cocaine, methamphetamine and 11 forged prescriptions.

Also, on December 1, Smith stopped a vehicle which was traveling the wrong direction on a one-way street in downtown Cumming.   He discovered that the driver of the car was an elderly female from Baldwin County who had been reported missing earlier that day.   She was an Alzheimer’s patient.   Smith was able to contact her family and arranged for her care at the South Precinct until her family arrived several hours later to take her home.

During the year, each Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office Precinct recognizes a Deputy of the Month.  At the end of each year, a Deputy of the Year is selected from the 12 monthly award winners.
