Suspect Sought in Woman’s Murder

Warrants have been taken for a suspect in the October 13 murder of a Cumming resident, Forsyth County Sheriff Ted Paxton said today.

Sheriff Paxton said that the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) has taken warrants for Jorge Montiel, age 25, of Cumming, charging him with Aggravated Sodomy, Burglary and Murder in the strangulation death and sexual assault of 34 year-old Maria Hernandez-Reyes.

The charges against Montiel, Sheriff Paxton said, are the result of a joint investigation involving the Sheriff’s Office, the GBI and Cumming Police Department.  “Without the cooperation of everyone involved we would not have been this far along in our investigation,”  Sheriff Paxton said.

Sheriff Paxton said that investigators found “credible forensic evidence” at the scene which links Montiel to the assault and murder of Ms. Hernandez-Reyes, age, 34, a married mother of two.

The victim was discovered by her husband and a tenant on the afternoon of October 13 when they returned home from work.

Anyone with information as to the whereabouts of Montiel is asked to contact the Sheriff’s Office at (770) 781-2200, Cumming Police Department at (770) 781-2000 or the GBI at (404) 244-2600.  Anonymous calls may be made to the Crime Stoppers line at (770) 888-7308.
