PET ADOPTION & RESOURCE CENTER
SURRENDER A PET
Please exhaust all efforts in privately and safely placing your pet before considering surrendering to the Pet Adoption and Resource Center. We accept owner-surrendered animals on a case by case basis and by appointment only.
STEPS TO SURRENDERING A PET
1. EXHAUST EVERY ALTERNATIVE OPTION.
If you adopted your pet from another shelter, private adoption, or from a rescue group, regardless of what state or county you reside, please contact that organization to see if they will accept the pet back into their program. Most organizations desire and/or require that you return the pet to them if you can no longer keep them.

You can also use our custom search below to locate rescue groups/organizations that might take the surrendered animal. Many animal/breed specific organizations are able to provide high-quality care for animals because they typically operate on a foster-based system rather than in a traditional kennel environment - allowing for individualized attention and socialization. Public shelters are often overwhelmed & must focus on high-volume, short-term housing, while smaller, non-profit rescues can offer specialized care for medical needs, rehabilitation, or behavioral issues specific to that breed/animal. Rescue organizations also have higher traffic of people looking for a certain dog, resulting in higher re-homing rates than animal shelters.
2. MAKE AN APPOINTMENT AND PAY SURRENDER FEE.
Call the Pet Adoption and Resource Center and speak with an admission specialist. They will provide you the Owner Surrender Background Form and the Owner Surrender Release Form via e-mail. Once these forms are returned to PARC, they will call you to schedule an intake appointment and answer any questions you may have. There is a $60 surrender fee per animal that must be paid at the time of surrender. Please note, there is a current waiting list for owner surrenders.
A NOTE ON ANIMAL BEHAVIOR
Please note that not every animal surrendered to the shelter will be considered as a public adoption candidate for the Pet Adoption and Resource Center. This is contingent on their behavior and medical history, acclimation to the shelter environment, behavior evaluation, medical examination and resources available for placement. The Pet Adoption and Resource Center makes every effort to place animals through its adoption program, its transfer partners, or with its Pups with Purpose program. There is no guarantee that the efforts will be successful, and animals with severe health and/or behavior concerns could be humanely euthanized.
